My Red Cardinal (and Bird Obsession), at Bear Creek Park in Houston, Texas

As my daughter’s “Hoosier” Dad pointed out recently, the Northern Cardinal is Indiana’s Official State Bird and has been since 1933. However, Indiana is not alone…Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, North Carolina, and Virginia all choose this as their State Bird!  The males are the beautiful red ones, the females are the brown ones with reddish wings.  I just think they are beautiful and sound so cheerful! To me, they have always been associated with a sign of good luck and happiness! I always tell my kids, when I see my Red Cardinals, I know it’s a good omen and will be a wonderful day!

I was driving through Bear Creek park the other day and stumbled on this beautiful Red Cardinal about to take a bird bath so I had to stick around!

Splish splash he was taking a bath…

I guess I never saw one take a bird bath before so it was fun to watch and try to capture.

He knew at this point I was watching him.

That face cracked me up like… “What you talking ’bout Willis?!”

Guess he put the word out that I was safe, as next it was the female’s turn-I LOVE this shot!
But she watched me non-stop to be sure!
After I was done, I moved on and saw this little guy hanging out.
Then it was on to these two squakers – man, they were LOUD!
This Egret was a bit more skeptical about me – notice the Easter egg in the grass nearby… guess someone didn’t find all their eggs or maybe the Easter bunny left one for him!

Did you know that Red Cardinals don’t migrate and that they live within a 1.24 mile (2 kilometer) radius of their birthplace?

Also, due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, it is illegal to own one as a pet or to kill one – they are a government-protected wild bird species. (Yea!!!)

They can live up to 15 years too!

Wishing you all the luck of the Red Cardinal and that you have a beautiful today!!!

  1. What a great way to spend a day. I also laughed out loud at the line “That face cracked me up like… “What you talking ’bout Willis?!” 🙂
